Why waste your money on a 2006, used-up Maxum 4200 SY? Or yet another boring Lexus that lets you down? Over here in Sweden and elsewhere in Scandinavia, a lot of people are crazy about restoring old (wooden) yachts and veteran cars of the 1930s-1970s, even if nurturing such projects often set them back way more than buying new cars and boats would. Why is that so? Perhaps life was better around 1950? Or perhaps not. Personally, I'd say life always has involved hardship and seldom been carefree, but that didn't exactly bother people like Virgil Exner, did it? (Click...

Sweet little hobby Create a buzz, and help distressed bees, with your own hive JANET CARSON SPECIAL TO THE DEMOCRAT-GAZETTE While some people fear bees and many worry about getting stung, these little insects more than redeem themselves as the primary pollinators of plants worldwide. Today is National Honeybee Appreciation Day well deserved because its estimated that more than 80 percent of flowering plants and almost a third of human food crops need bees as pollinators. Reports have been claiming the loss of bee populations is due to mites, pesticides and human activities. Many species of pollinators, including bees,...

Each year, around 10 000 cars of America's past flood the streets of Swedish Västerås. I'm not an owner of such a vehicle myself (although I plan to be - the future of my economy is looking good!), but I happen to love these cars and can't help but feeling somewhat proud, as a Swede, over my country hosting such an event (regardless of what Buford T Justice has to say about it). Greetings from Volvo Land to America/one nation of car lovers to another! (Links to clips below, enjoy!)

It's hard for his friends to hear this, but 13-year-old Scott MacMillan of Georgetown sometimes falls asleep with a vacuum cleaner in his arms. His mother, Barb, backs up his story. In fact, she says, when a tornado siren once sounded, Scott rounded up all his vacuum cleaners and hunkered down with them in the bathroom. That wasn't easy. Scott owns 150 vacuum cleaners. "I've been made fun of so much, it doesn't matter anymore," Scott says. "I collect vacuum cleaners. So what?" Scott is among 42 people - mostly adults - gathered at the Embassy Suites Central in North...

One can measure the failures of the film American Beauty in so many ways, but perhaps the best is to realize that the screenwriter was so unsure of his audiences ability to spot a creep that he had to make Kevin Spaceys next-door neighbor not just a sadist and a closet case but also a collector of Nazi memorabilia. I bring this up because a fetish for the baubles of fascism is generally thought to be a good way of alienating civilized company. The auction house Christies refuses to sell the stuff. And whatever the interpretative fallacies of the late...

hi. I'm looking to start experimenting with solar cells - just enough juice to perhaps power (potentially at a later time) a lamp, a laptop dock, 2xAA battery charger, or, at its most ambitious, a desktop PC. where do I start? any advice would be appreciated, including where to reliably get them at a decent price.

The 'biggest American car show in the world' opened in Västerås in central Sweden on Thursday. More than 10,000 cars are expected for the Big Meet 2008 show. The annual event started 31 years ago and was founded by Kjell Gustafsson who has seen it grow from the humble beginnings of 40-80 cars in a parking lot in Anderstorp. "Just to keep the show going over three days costs 1.5 million kronor ($252,000). 160 officials work with this. That is around the same as the Hultsfred festival," Gustafsson said to Di.se. The Big Meet 2008 show will take place over...
(Sweden:) Government to launch 'driving test' for boats

Swedish boaters may soon need to pass a 'driving test' before taking to the seas. Should a forthcoming government proposal gain acceptance the new requirement will apply to boats that are over seven metres long and/or have a top speed of at least ten knots. "Between 200,000 and 250,000 boat owners may need to take the driving test," said Lars Högdahl from the Ministry of Enterprise. A generous set of transitional rules may however soften the blow. Seasoned boaters with many years of documented experience will for example be eligible for a licence without needing to first pass a test....
